Our magical creative blocks are a real eye-catcher in themselves, but you can easily give them an individual touch - in this tutorial for a cover we show you how!
material
- screen-printed cardboard 2 mm
- book cloth
- creative block
- design paper
- book glue (add some water)
In our example, we want to use the creative block 8.5 cm x 11.5 cm .
tools
- Paint brush
- bone folder
- Scissors
- Pencil
- scrap paper
- set square with cutting edge
Optional:
Ribbon/cord , Velcro stickers , or magnets for closing.
cuts
(Width x height each)
- (1x) 1.3 cm x 8.6 cm
- (2x) 8.6 cm x 11.6 cm
- (1x) 11.5 cm x 16 cm (outside)
- (1x) 8.2 cm x 4 cm (inside)
- (1x) 13 cm x 11.5 cm (outside)
- (1x) approx. 8.3 cm x 10.3 cm (inside, please adjust)
Step 1 - Cover the exterior
Start by gluing one of the larger pieces of cardboard you cut to the outside bookcloth, leaving at least 1.5cm of space at the bottom, right and left.
Next, place the narrow spine piece with a gap of 0.4 cm and then glue the remaining cardboard to the remaining piece of book cloth with the same gap.
Next, take your piece of design paper , which you have cut to the external dimensions described, and stick it onto the top cardboard from the outside. Make sure that your paper is lying straight on the cardboard and that the top edge reaches just before the first fold. Here, too, you should have an overhang of 1.5 cm on both sides and at the bottom.
You can then use your scissors to cut the corners diagonally to a good 2 mm . Now you can fold over and glue the short and then the long sides.
It's worth reworking all the edges with the bone folder - this makes them much cleaner and clearer!
Step 2 - lining the interior
Now glue the inner linen to the middle of both folds. First press the linen onto the back and then use the bone folder to neatly finish the folds.
Now all that's missing is the cover paper on the inside of the lid. We've given you approximate dimensions for this, but you're welcome to adjust it to your own pad.
Step 3 - Completion
The creative pad can then be glued into your envelope with its own cardboard backing. The pad will sit quite close to the edge in the envelope. So take advantage of the moment while the glue is still wet and move your pad around a little to get it in exactly the right place. Close the lid once too, so you can be sure that your pad is in exactly the right position.
Finally, if you want, you can add a closure of your choice.
To do it like in the example we show you here, you need to make two holes in the lid, thread an elastic band through it and tie it. To cover the knot, you can use a matching small button, for example, which completes your design on the front. You can also attach this through the two holes.
Voila, you did it.
I hope you enjoy making this!
